From South Point, take Highway 11 north along the western flank of the Big Island to reach the southern portion of the Kona District. The long stretch of road will lead you past large and desolate fields of rock formed from historic lava flows. This is the dramatic landscape that you will repeatedly encounter around the island and it serves as evidence of nature's raw formative powers. As signs of civilization slowly reappear along the highway, stop off at one of the numerous local fruit and coffee stands for healthy island refreshments.
