Macau has always had a bit of a reputation due to the legalization of gambling here starting in the mid-19th century. Drugs, organized crime and prostitution, although somewhat hidden, of course followed. In 2002, after a 40-year monopoly on Macau's gambling industry by Stanley Ho and his company Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau,… the Chinese government introduced competition and issued gaming licenses to additional investors including Steve Wynn (Wynn Resorts) and Galaxy Entertainment (originally in a partnership with the Las Vegas Sands). Gambling revenue has continued to skyrocket every year since.
