Take note that on Sundays and on public holidays, thousands of Hong Kong's foreign domestic workers use their day off to gather in landmark areas such as the streets of Central to socialize, picnic, and greet friendly and familiar faces from back home. Juxtaposed here among the high-end hotels and retail shops, the overflowing crowds of mostly maids and servants present an image of collective strength and sacrifice. For the most part, these workers came to Hong Kong in search of employment and better pay than that afforded in their own countries. They too are an important part of the fabric of modern Hong Kong.
