Leprosy (now called Hansen's disease), one of many introduced diseases in Hawaii, had already affected mankind around the world for thousands of years. Caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae (identified in 1873 by Dr. Gerhard Hansen of Norway), a case was first diagnosed on the islands in 1835.
