Against this backdrop, conflict soon emerged between Japan and the United States.  On the seemingly peaceful morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese navy launched a surprise preemptive strike against the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Two waves of aerial attacks (with support from submarines) were aimed at U.S. battleships, destroyers, and warships. The attacks also targeted U.S. aircraft located at air bases (Wheeler Field, Hickam Field, Bellows Field, Ewa Marine Corps Air Station, and Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Stations) across the island.  U.S. servicemen awoke that Sunday morning to the sound of bombs and destruction.
