On August 9, 1965, after much behind the scenes wrangling, Singapore was officially expelled from Malaysia and thus found itself thrust on to the world stage as a fully independent state.  Lee Kuan Yew famously held a tearful televised press conference in announcing the separation of Singapore from Malaysia (and effectively creating a new country). How would the Republic of Singapore survive, with its noticeable lack of land, natural resources, and hospitable neighbors?  How would the young nation cope with high unemployment, a growing population, and political turmoil?
