Although it served as the heart of commerce in Singapore, the Quays had truthfully become run-down after almost 170 years of continuous use and the waterway grew filthy and unpleasant. All this changed beginning in the 1980s when the government embarked on a successful conservation and cleanup project in the area after new container terminal facilities were built elsewhere on the island. |
