In the meantime, there remain two great reasons to visit Maunaloa each year and that is to catch the start of the exciting and competitive women's Na Wahine O Ke Kai (Women of the Sea) outrigger canoe race in September and the men's Molokai Hoe Canoe Race in October. Competitors from both races paddle the treacherous Ka'iwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu, and the women's event has been held since 1979 while the men's event first began in 1952.
