In the meantime, there remain two great reasons to visit Maunaloa each year and that is to catch the start of the exciting and competitive women's Na Wahine O Ke Kai (Women of the Sea) outrigger canoe race in September and the men's Molokai Hoe Canoe Race in October. |

Competitors from both races paddle the treacherous Ka'iwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu, and the women's event has been held since 1979 while the men's event first began in 1952. |
